How to Clean Gutters Without a Ladder (Safe Methods)

By R.R.M External Cleaning Specialist · 25 September 2026 · 5 min read

Not everyone can — or should — climb a ladder. Whether it's mobility, confidence, or a three-storey townhouse, here are the genuinely safe ways to get gutters cleaned without going up a ladder.

Option 1: Professional vacuum from the ground (best)

This is what we do on most jobs. A high-reach carbon-fibre pole with a vacuum head clears gutters up to three storeys while the operator stays safely on the ground. A camera on the head lets us see inside the gutter in real time.

It's faster than ladders, there's no equipment leaning on your fascias, and it reaches over conservatories and extensions that ladders can't safely access. For most homeowners, this is the answer.

Option 2: Telescopic gutter tools (DIY, light debris only)

Telescopic poles with scoop or brush attachments, used from the ground, can clear light leaf litter from accessible gutters. They're cheap (£20–£40) and fine for bungalows with simple blockages — but they can't shift compacted moss, can't reach outlets properly, and you can't see what you're doing.

What NOT to do

Please don't: climb onto the roof to reach gutters (roof tiles break and falls are often fatal), lean far out of upstairs windows with a pole, or use a pressure washer aimed up at the gutter — it blasts water under tiles and behind fascias, causing exactly the damp you're trying to prevent.
